ETHIOPIAN GRAND CULTURAL EXPEDITION BY SURFACE

Day 1: Depart South from Addis via Butajira. On the way, visit the archeological sites of Tiya and Adadi Maryam. Overnight in Hawassa.


Day 2: After breakfast, take a boat trip on Lake Hawassa to visit the fish market while admiring the amazing birdlife in the area, and maybe some hippos. Then proceed to Dorze to visit the Dorze people who are known for their tall beehive-like huts and quality woven cotton fabrics. If the day is a market day, you will visit the market. Overnight in Arba Minch.


Day 3: In the morning, we will embark on a boat trip on Lake Chamo to visit the hippos, and the famous Crocodile market. Then proceed driving to Jinka for an Overnight stay, stopping at Key Afar for a visit if it is market day.


Day 4: Early in the morning, drive to Mago National Park to visit the Mursi Tribes, who are known for their lower lip and earlobe plates. Overnight in Jinka.


Day 5: Drive to Turmi via Dimeka. If the day is a market day in Dimeka that will be visited as it is one of the most colorful markets in the South Omo. At night, visit the traditional Hamer night dancing known as Evangadi. Overnight in Turmi, camping or in a lodge.


Day 6: Drive to proceed to Konso via Erbore while visiting the market at Erbore on the way. Overnight in a hotel at Kanta Lodge.


Day 7: Visit the Konso people who are known for their wooden totems erected in honor of the dead warriors and their intricate agricultural terracing techniques. Also, visit the natural "New York" village. Afterward, continue driving to Lake Langano for an overnight stay on the lakeshore - camping or in a lodge.


Day 8: After a refreshing morning swim in Lake Langano and head back to Addis Ababa. On the way, visit Lake Abijata-Shalla National Park and stop at Lake Ziway to witness the local birdlife.

ETHIOPIAN GRAND CULTURAL EXPEDITION BY SURFACE

Day 1: Arrive in Addis Ababa and enjoy a city tour. In the afternoon, visit sites including the National Museum, Entoto Mountains for a wonderful view of the capital city and St. Mary’s church in addition to conducting a tour around the capital.

Day 2: In the morning, drive to the crater lakes of Debrezeit and the three rift valley lakes of Shalla, Abijata, and Langano. These lakes are rich in bird species such as pelicans, flamingos, and stokes. Overnight in a hotel at Langano.

Day 3: After breakfast enjoy around Lake Langano. Late afternoon, drive to Arba Minch. Overnight Hotel at Arba- Minch.

Day 4: Arba-Minch visit Nechisar National Park and boat excursion on Lake Chamo. Overnight hotel at Arba-Minch.

Day 5: Drive from Arba -Minch to Konso, Tsemai, and Jinka tribal villages. Overnight stay at Jinka in a hotel.

Day 6: Visit in Jinka the Mursi tribal village - Mago National park. Overnight Camping or back to Jinka and overnight hotel.

Day 7: Mago National Park - Turmi - Hammer tribal village. Overnight Camping /hotel.

Day 8: Tumi – Murulle - Karo tribal village - Turmi. Overnight - Camping/hotel.

Day 9: Turmi - Omorate to visit the Dasanech tribal village and back to Turmi. Overnight -Camping/ hotel.

Day 10: Turmi - Erbore and Borena tribal villages then Yabello. Overnight - hotel at Yabelo.

Day 11: Drive from Yabelo to Sidama tribal village. Overnight in Wendo Genet.

Day 12: Drive from Wendo Genet to Addis Ababa via Lake Ziway - sightseeing in Addis Ababa. Evening farewell dinner party by Selam Tours and departure.

 

OMO VALLEY AND HISTORIC ROUTE BY SURFACE 17 DAYS / 16 NIGHTS

Day 10: Drive to Dilla to visit Tutu Fella Stele and for dinner and proceed to Aregash lodge.
Day 11: Drive to Addis Ababa via Hawassa, here visit the fish market, Lake Langano and Abijata - Shalla National Park. Overnight hotel.
Day 12: Transfer to the airport and fly to Bahir Dar; boat trip on Lake Tana, visit the monasteries, Blue Nile falls and city tour. Overnight hotel.
Day 13: Transfer to the airport and drive/fly to Gondar for a city tour. Overnight hotel.
Day 14: Transfer to the airport and fly to Lalibela to visit the 11 monolithic churches. Overnight hotel.
Day 15: Transfer to the airport and fly to Axum for a city tour. Overnight hotel.
Day 16: Transfer to the airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 17: Departure.

OMO VALLEY & BORENA

Day 1: Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport
Day 2: Early in the morning depart for Arba Minch. Overnight stay at Arba-Minch in a hotel.
Day 3: After breakfast excursion to Nechisar National Park - a haven for large herds of plains game; in the afternoon, a motorboat journey over Lake Chamo, the basking ground for thousands of hippos, and crocodiles.
Day 4: Leave for Jinka.
Day 5: Morning, visit the Mursi tribe & afternoon, game viewing at Mago National Park.
Day 6: Depart for Murulle and visit Karo villages.
Day 7: Morning excursion to Kangaten and visit, while crossing the Omo River, the Bumi tribe who, like the others, use scarifice for cosmetic purposes. Afternoon, leave for Turmi.
Day 8: Morning excursion to Omorate to visit the Geleb (Dasanech) and afternoon, visit Hammer villages.
Day 9: Drive to Konso and visit the villages.
Day 10: Depart for Yabello to witness salt extracting from a crater lake by the Borena people.
Day 11: Leave for Yirgalem enjoying en-route coffee plantations as well as the meeting the Sidama people.
Day 12: Easy drive back to Addis Ababa.

NATURE - CULTURE AND TRIBES OF OMO VALLEY

Day 1: Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Air Port

Meet and greet service with our signboard at the exit of the luggage claim and to transfer you
to the hotel. Overnight stay in a chosen hotel.

Day 2: City tour in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa is the fourth diplomatic city in the world located at an altitude of 2300-2500 meter above sea level with a pleasant climate and a backdrop of gardens with eucalyptus tree-covered mountains. The city was founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taitu.

Visit Entoto mountains, with a very nice view over the capital, the National and Ethnographic Museum, St. George church and Merkato - the biggest open-air market in Africa. Overnight stay in the same hotel.

Day 3: Drive to Dorze via Butajira Road
The Dorze is found under the Omotic language family. They are famous for constructing distinguished beehive-shaped huts, terrace cultivation and the best weaving work of Ethiopia. Overnight stay at Dorze lodge. 

Day 4: Boat trip on Lake Chamo and drive to Konso
Make a boat trip on Lake Chamo where the longest and largest crocodiles of Africa take a sunbath on the shores. Hippos hide under water; and you will also see a good range of birds including; weavers, sunbirds, waxbills, and colonies of pelicans. Late in the afternoon drive to Konso through 90kms asphalt road. 

The Konso are famous for their Waga’s, wooden grave monuments, which are erected in the compounds of Konso chiefs to honor their ancestors. Overnight stay in Konso.

Day 5: Drive to Turmi via Tsemay and Arebore
Via a passageway through the hot Weyto Valley, you drive to Turmi in the center of the Hammer area. Overnight stay in Turmi at Buska or Turmi lodge. 

Day 6: Excursion to Omorate
Visit the Dassenech, so-called Geleb people, who live on the banks of the Omo River. Cross the river by wooden boats to visit their villages. Overnight stay in the same lodge. 

Day 7: Drive to Jinka
Visit the ethnographic museum of Jinka, which has a permanent exhibition of the people of the Omo valley. Overnight stay in Jinka in a reserved hotel or lodge.

Day 8: Excursion to Mursi
The Mursi are well known for their big clay plates that the women bear on their lower lip and ear. Overnight stay in reserved hotel or lodge. 

Day 9: Drive to Yabelo 
In the morning, you drive to Yabelo through the semi-arid area of Borena. The Borena are a semi-nomadic tribe and you can see a small flock of camel with their Borena owners here and there. Overnight stay in Yabelo in reserved Motel or Borena lodge.

Day 10: Drive to Hawassa
Drive through the region of the Gedeo and the Sidama people - known for their vast organic coffee plantations and production of Enset (false banana). The hills and mountains are intensively cultivated in this densely populated area. In Hawassa, you can also walk around the ditch for a nice sunset and aquatic birds; malachite and pied kingfisher, long-necked cormorants, storks, herons, Egyptian goose, and so on. Overnight stay in a reserved hotel in Hawassa.

Day 11: Drive back to Addis Ababa via the Great Rift Valley Lakes 
In the morning, first visit the scenic morning fish market of Hawassa where the fishermen sell their fresh tilapia, catfish, and barbus whereas pelicans and storks compete to take the leftover from the fish. You can also spot black and white colobus monkeys around the Amora Gedele. Make last day shopping in Addis and in the late afternoon have a farewell dinner and check in for a flight back home.

Day 2: Drive to Abijata, Shalla and Langano Lakes. Overnight at Langano in a reserved hotel or Lodge.
Day 3: Drive to Wolaita, Chencha (Dorze people).  Overnight Arbaminch in a selected hotel or Lodge.
Day 4: Netch Sar National Park and Chamo Lake. Overnight Arbaminch in the same hotel or lodge.
Day 5: Arbamich - Jinka -Tsemay, Ari Benna People.  Overnight at Jinka in a hotel.
Day 6: Visit Mursi People and overnight Mago National Park, camping.
Day 7: Visit Karo People & village.  Proceed for Hammer people to Turmi.  Overnight Camp or Bungalows at Buska or Turmi Lodge.
Day 8: Visit the Hammer people, colorful markets at Dimeka or Turmi depending on the market days. The Hammer people dance during their marriage ceremonies with the bull jumping. Overnight stay in Turmi or Buska lodge.
Day 9: Drive to Omorate for Dassanech people & villages, and back to Turmi for Hammer villages. Overnight at Turmi.
Day 10: Drive to Konso through the Erbore people by visiting the Konso villages. Overnight Arba Minch.
Day 11: Drive back to Addis. Overnight in a chosen hotel.
Day 12: Departure.
